Editing Definitions

  • Developmental Edit

    In a typical developmental edit, the developmental editor provides feedback on the overall story structure and elements, such as pacing, character arcs, plot development, and world-building. Often, more than one round of developmental editing occurs between the author and the editor.

  • Line (Substantive) Edit

    Line editing is what makes the writing come together like a puzzle. Line editors look at the story on a paragraph and sentence level to make sure the plot and character arcs are moving forward as they should for the pace of the story. The mood and tone of a scene or the story are reviewed. Finally, the editor will look out for an author’s challenges but never take away from an author’s voice.

  • Copy Edit

    The copy editor corrects challenges like spelling, grammar, usage, and punctuation. The copy editor should also check for any minor discrepancies in the world-building, character descriptions, or plot.

  • Proof Edit

    Proofreaders check the manuscript for grammar and formatting errors. This editor is in charge of making sure that the manuscript is clean and ready to upload to the person who will be formatting the novel.

  • Manuscript Review

    A manuscript edit reviews everything a developmental editor would, but with less feedback. This type of edit usually comes with some one-on-one coaching sessions, either in the form of a discussion or an email. Most often, this type of edit would be the first edit to occur to determine if more intensive developmental edits are needed.

  • ESL Edit

    English editors look for mistakes in grammar, spelling, connotative meanings versus denotative meanings, proper sentence & paragraph structure, and punctuation. They also review word choice, the clarity of sentences, and sentences that connect ideas to make them flow smoothly. This edit is done for writers whose first language is not English.

1. How far in advance should I book editing services?

Our availability fills up fast. We suggest you book about three to four months in advance of your intended ARC release date.

2. What genres do you edit?

We edit every genre in the fictional world. There are a few exceptions within the taboo sub-genres we do not edit. Please inquire for more information.

3. do we have an editing and or formatting contract?

The answer is yes. We’ll make sure you receive the contract two weeks prior to your editing start date.

4. DO we work with clients outside the u.S.A.?

Yes, we have a global clientele; however, we edit in American and British English
